RedBull Music Academy Interview: Bosnian Rainbows’ Omar Rodriguez Lopez

When At The Drive-In reformed for a handful of gigs last year, the motive was fairly obvious. The nostalgic pleading from fans and promoters became too great to ignore for the El-Paso pioneers and perhaps more importantly, so did the digits on the paycheque.

But as it turned out, that look back into the past sparked a new chapter of creativity for Omar Rodriquez-Lopez. Inspired by the democratic spirit of At The Drive-In, the guitarist went on to form his latest band Bosnian Rainbows – who performed a special show for RBMA Radio’s Panamérika show on June 28 and then dropped by RBMA Radio Berlin last week – with Deantoni Parks (drums) Nicci Kasper (keyboard) and fantastically named Teri Gender Bender (vocals).

Formerly a member of At The Drive-In, De Facto and The Mars Volta, and currently playing in alt-rock foursome Bosnian Rainbows, Omar Rodríguez-López is a musician who needs no introduction to anyone even vaguely into rock music since the turn of the millennium.

Bosnian Rainbows – ‘Turtle Neck’, from the album ‘Bosnian Rainbows’

Below, the guitarist talks Clash through five albums of absolute importance to his musical development – five truly foundational records.

MTV IGGY: Color Outside the lines with Bosnian Rainbows - Photo Gallery

Bosnian Rainbows is a supergroup/collective of mad geniuses composed of Mars Volta leader and guitarist Omar Rodríguez-López and drummer Deantoni Parks, Le Butcherettes frontwoman Teresa Suárez AKA Teri Gender Bender, and keyboardist Nicci Kasper. Their self-titled debut is sprawling, gorgeous, and hard to categorize with influence drawn from prog-rock, New Wave pop, and the movies. It evidence of just how differently the quartet likes to do things.

When they stopped in New York on tour, MTV Iggy took them to Williamsburg and splashed some surreal color around on a gray day.

SPIN Premiere: Eureka The Butcher “Desert Rituals” Video

imageimage

The Mars Volta may have splintered but that’s thankfully done nothing to slow the tide of music emerging from its former members. Eureka the Butcher is Marcel Rodríguez-López: keyboardist/percussionist from MV, drummer for El Paso-bred psych warriors Zechs Marquise, one-man production machine, and, yes, the younger brother of a certain fella named Omar. He’s just released his first solo album, Music for Mothers, and it fits squarely within the bass-damaged Los Angeles beat scene. Above, you’ll find the video for “Desert Rituals,” a lurching groove that packs as much hidden menace as it does stony bliss. The ’90s-directed clip interprets Eureka’s handle rather literally, following Marcel and two compatriots (including his touring dancer/muse Sadah Luna) on a dark and weary ride into the desert. Once they park the car, we find out what’s been in the trunk that entire time … sort of. Though the creature is shaped like a man, the final scene reveals that it may have been something more sinister in nature. Enjoy the ride but beware — there will be blood.

When Omar Rodríguez-López—formerly of The Mars Volta and At the Drive-In—tapped Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), Deantoni Parks and Nicci Kasper (KUDU) to fly to Europe and perform a string of dates as the Omar Rodríguez-López Group, a full-throttle collaboration wasn’t exactly on the agenda. It wasn’t until they hit a practice room in Hamburg, Germany, where the band was brushing up on some of the material they were touring behind off of Rodríguez-López’s Octopus Kool Aid that they started messing around with a few ideas they couldn’t wait for the return trip home to get down on tape.

"We realized, ‘Hey, we get along really well as people and we’re all really similar in ways offstage!’" says Gender Bender, calling in from the road somewhere in rural Georgia. "We’re from the same pack, the same tribe, and that’s when we realized that we should just do it."
